Question: What would happen if the earth had more moons? What would happen if we had as many moons as Jupiter?

  1. Ianj1999, more then one moon you say! Well, first of all, we’d have a much more interesting sky 🙂 It might become harder to define weeks and months (unless we went by the biggest/closest moon). As long as the moons were spaced “properly” they could be stable and nothing bad would happen (and Earth might even still have rings, for all we know!).
If these two moons were differently sized and were too masssive, they would probably really impact on your tidal waves and if they were in orbitsso that they have close encounters, well I’d rather live on Mars! 😛

  2. Hey ianj1999 thanks for the awesome questions today, this is another great one! Like Mia said, it would be likely that our waves would be veeery different. Each moon would have its own gravity to some degree which would affect us. On top of that, they would actually even change our earth’s orbit! Did you know that our moon slows down the earth by about 1 second every 67,000 years! So if we had 2, 3, 4, or even more moons, there is a very good chance that our earth would be knocked around even more! Not so much that would ever notice in your lifetime, but it would setill be measurable!

  3. Hey ianj1999!

Mia and Sam have got this one covered, but I think it’s a great concept for a sci-fi novel…

If we had more moons, do you think that would affect the way life evolved? Maybe with different effects of gravity from a variety of sources, we’d see different sea-creatures, maybe even weird weather! Speculative fiction at its finest! 🙂
