Jacob! Hi! The best smelling experiment is when you have to dissolve sucrose in something like water. Sucrose is a sugar that is commonly used in candy making! So when I have to dissolve sucrose for my bacteria, the lab smells like a lolly factory! It smells of toffee and so so yummy!
Now the worst smelling experiment is when I try to grow up bacteria from soil and I grow them up in a liquid that contains rubbish! wow! it is sooooooooo stinky! yuck! Lucky I don’t have to do that experiment anymore!
Best smelling: We use this stuff called ‘vanillin’ in lab sometimes. We dip white plates with our chemical samples into the vanillin to see if our chemical is there, then we heat it up with a heatgun! Can you guess what it smells like?
Delicious vanilla icecream. Always makes me hungry.
Worst smelling: So, we grow bacteria in big plastic containers, (some people think it smells like vegemite, but I’m not convinced….), but when it’s time to finish our experiments, we have to kill the bacteria by tipping a heap of bleach into the containers. Imagine a chlorine swimming pool filled with vegemite and rotten meat.

BUT, there is a chemical called beta-mercaptoethanol that I use a lot in the lab (it’s pretty bad for you and the environment) that I could only describe as smelling like dead fish mixed with farts. It’s pretty disgusting!
The worst is when you use a chemical that smells like rotten eggs – yuck! The best smell is skim milk I think (maybe there are more bad smells : ( then good ones!!!) lol
Well…some experiments with bacteria can smell quite sweet – some smell like flowers and / or sugar. But most of my experiments involve stinky gut bugs that live in your intestines, so they smell like poo! (Or to be more correct, Poo smells like those gut bugs!!)
