Knel3 cool question and one that gets quite a lot of attention here in the Science community. There is research suggesting that intelligence is something we inherit from mum and dad. So if your parents are amazing and brilliant, you end up amazing and brilliant. BUT! there was research conducted where they had identical twins that we adopted by two different families. These twins had very different intelligence levels!
One of the twins was very intelligent, this twin was in a hard working family where learning and good behaviour was constantly encouraged. The other twin was not as smart, didn’t do as well in school. This twin came from a poor, uneducated adopted family.
These sort of studies suggest that the environment that you are in, will very much impact on your overall intellect. So really what it says is that intellect in many ways is up too you!
There are some forms of Autism where a person might be socially awkward but their intelligence is AMAZING! These people have a programmed brain for very complicated thought processes like Maths, Physics, Astrophysics! Gosh amazing minds! 😀
But honestly, your environment will be the biggest influence on your intelligence. So pick up your book, study and intellect comes with learning. 🙂 It doesn’t matter who you are, or where you come from, you can always achieve greatness!
He knel3 super good question! Like Mia said, there are a lot of inside and outside influences. It is likely that you get some of your intelligence from your parents. But nowhere near all of it. There are LOTS of environmental factors. Did you know that a study recently showed that kids that went to daycare were better at maths when they went to school! This is an example of how the environment can affect us. And it can be on all sorts of levels too. You can work really hard to train yourself to remember more information. But then different environmental factors can also change you in your DNA! This is called epigenetics, and means changes in how your DNA makes proteins and works on top of the things you inherit from your parents!
There really are so many different things that can change how intelligent you are right from before you are born. Your best bet is to make sure you are healthy and active (to give you “good” epigenetics) and you train your brain to work hard and remember!
I think it depends on what you mean by intelligence. There are a lot of different kinds (and the environment stuff Mia and Sam talked about is important too!)
In the same way one person might be good at running, while another is good at say, knitting, (the second is me!), two people might have different ‘intelligences’.
My mum, for example, is really good at working with people. She just gets how people are feeling and can relate to them. She has high ’emotional intelligence’.
I have friends who are SO clever at maths and physics, but have no idea how other people around them are feeling (and sometimes say stupid things to upset people without even realising). They have high, I guess, ‘mathematical intelligence’.
Why do they develop so differently? Well, I think a lot of it has to do with what you’re passionate about. If you love reading, you’ll probably develop a higher intelligence with words and understanding text, just through practice!
If you love sports, you’ll get better at understanding your body and be intelligent about your work outs.
I’m sure it’s more complex than that, but it might be a good way to start looking at the subject. Less about ‘intelligence’ and more about ‘what kind’ of intelligence. : )
