Hiya right back at you 😀 Very good question you have there! From my chemistry studies I believe that vodka will freeze, but not at the temperature of your ordinary freezer at home, which is set to about -2oC. Reason for this is that vodka has a very interesting chemical composition, contains about 40% alcohol. In general, when you mix a liquid (in this case 40% ethanol) with water, what you are doing is actually lowering the freezing point of water. The 40% of alcohol in vodka, lowers the freezing point of water below -26C (or-17°F). That is insane, a -26C drop in temperature! It basically comes down to water purity. If water is pure it will freeze, add anything else into it, like Ethanol or salt and you now have change the freezing point of that solution. So to get vodka to freeze, what we need is something like an intense Siberian winter! That is crazy cold! You know, come to think of it! There is one other reason why vodka doesn’t freeze. Some people just drink it too fast, they don’t give it the chance too freeze! hhhhhmmmmm
Tell you what, I’ll make up a 40% solution of alcohol and I will put it in the -8oC freezer in the lab. Will let you know if I can get it too freeze!!! 😉
jmort80 was totally cool dude! and it was so freakin’ cold! I had to wear very thick and long gloves in order to handle the frozen ‘vodka’ ;~)
Lara it was my pleasure, that might now be my favorite experiment EVER lol was fun! 😀 need anything else frozen at -80oC?
