Question: Are there any current dormant volcanoes which are predicted to erupt any time in future?

  1. Hey magda what an interesting question. I didn’t know a lot about predicting volcano eruptions, I had a bit of a look. There are some volcanoes that are having a lot of activity in America (Alaska for example) that might erupt in the future. The problem is we have no way of knowing exactly when. When a volcano goes dormant it is in a cycle where the magma that erupts cools and it sort of shuts down. A lot of earthquakes around it can lead to it becoming active again. The problem here is that a little earthquake can make it suddenly turn active and erupt with very little warning, or it could end up that it takes years and years (maybe even hundreds to thousands) or not at all! It’s very tricky! So scientists pay very careful attention to all the rumblings underground near volcanoes to try and get some warning for us.

One thing I didn’t realise was how many volcanoes there are in Australia! Check out the list:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_volcanoes_in_Australia

That is a LOT, and I’ll bet there are some near you! Apparently, if they last erupted within a few thousand years, they are more likely to start up again… Having a look at that list there is some scary potential for eruptions here in Australia!

  2. Holy smokes!!! Get it? smokes? volcanoes? *sigh* I know lame!!!
Honestly, I got nothing add to this question Magda! Sam beat me to the punch lol and he did a fine job at it too.
I’m not a Volcanologist so I don’t get what makes a volcano errupt and what doesn’t. Thank you Sam for breaking it down for us 🙂
I do know this from High School and Uni study of Geography back in 2005:

THE RING OF FIRE! is an area around the Pacific which is geologicallyactive. The Ring of Fire actually coincides with the edges of the world’s main tectonic plates, (the Pacific Plate). This plate contains over 450 volcanoes and is home to approximately 75% of the world’s active volcanoes. https://www.worldatlas.com/aatlas/infopage/ringfire.gif

This means that there are volcanoes here that are more likely to erupt, but its REALLY hard to predict this until they actually do.

Sometimes they’ll look like the are about to pop! but then nah! nothing happens! Talk about being a very scary tease!
