Question: How long does it take for cancer to spread throughout the human Body?

Keywords: ,

  1. Hey jgall91 I think I was asked this question by you during our chat! Some cancers can take months to spread throughout the body, some can take years and years. Others don’t spread at all, they just sit there where they started! They are all very different.

Here’s a cool fact. Cancers can spread by using proteins called proteases. Some of these, called metalloproteases, chomp up our blood vessels, and by doing that they let the cancer cells break into our bloodstream, which is what helps them spread throughout our bodies!

  2. Another cancer question and a different one! well done jgall91!
The speed at which a cancer spreads will be very much determined by the type of cancer that it is. No two cancers are alike so its hard to give a solid answer. For example there was a study that reported that cancers of the pancreas can take 20 years to develop and spread! 20 years, gosh! I’m 27 years old now! So 20 years is really a long time. Other cancers are far more aggressive and spread in about a year or less. These are nasty, the cancer cells metastasize (spread) really fast and take up many parts of the body!
Wish we could measure cancer cells spread with more ease, might make it easier for us to come up with better treatments and cure options. Hope that answers your question! 🙂

  3. Hi jgall91, It really depends on the cancer and at what stage it is and if it is a type that will spread. Like Sam says they are all different. The aim is to treat a person before the cancer spreads.
