Question: From a biologist point of view, whats better for you butter or margarine? (taking into account trans-fats)

  1. Hey chris thanks for the awesome question!

I have never really thought too much about it because my mum just always made me eat margarine and I still do haha! But the reality is that butter is loaded with saturated fats. and margarine has much less.
Trans fats are bad, yes, BUT in Australia there is a lot of pressure to make sure margarine is as free from trans fats as possible, so here where we live it’s margarine all the way!

  2. Chris! Epic question mate! I love butter! Not a big fan of margarine, don’t like the taste! I will say this, I think both are healthy in moderation! I can’t say one if better over the other because neither of them are actually good for us lol here is why! A healthy diet should include all foods from the food pyramid in healthy moderation and when we think about a heart- healthy diet we need to be thinking about eating UNSATURATED fats from a variety of sources, like avocados, peanut butter and olive oil. Butter and margarine have a lot of saturated and trans fats. So this is when we process the fats and turn them into really unhealthy saturated and trans fats! So really, neither margarine or butter is all that good for you! I guess its what you like to eat! I like butter, but I should use something else…. :S

  3. ahhhhh the answer keeps changing! Margarines that do not contain trans-fats would be better (in moderation : )

  4. Hi Chris!

Mmm, salted butter is delicious, but it ain’t great for you if you have it everyday.

Our bodies are very good at breaking down UNsaturated fats (they have less hydrogen in them) but the saturated kinds can build up. I like this olive-based margarine stuff my family gets, olive oil is one of the good kinds of fats!
