Question: What food can you eat in space?

Keywords: , ,

  1. Hi Lara! We eat Space food in out space. Apparently the first foods that astronauts could eat was pureed meat and chocolate sauce! Can you imagine, steak with chocolate gravy? hehehe The food became a bot more appetizing, they can now have anything from Japanese noodles, to hamburgers, and fresh fruit. The only trick is, a lot of the fresh fruit and vegetable will rott very quickly so they need to eat it within a few days in flight. Hope that answered your question. Now I am curious, do you think they have fairy-floss in out of space? Hope so!

  2. Hey Lara!

I was reading the other day that they’re doing a test run of a mission to Mars (just in a room on Earth, to check everything will work!), and they gave the astronauts all the gross dried out powdery foods they normally do, but told them to get creative!

They started mixing up new combinations, making their own dishes from the few ingredients they had! Apparently it’s really good for them to stay creative with their cooking on board the shuttle, makes them happier and healthier!

So I guess the answer is you can eat whatever you want, if you’re creative enough to cook it!

  3. Hey Lara, Mia and Eleanor had some pretty good answers, but I’ll add one more for you…

For trips like those on Mars (and even on earth) scientists are talking about feeding astronauts algae! Like the algae you find on rocks in rivers and in the ocean (except grown in a lab). I might be a bit gross, but has heaps of things in it that are very good for you!

  4. Space food is dehydrated (water removed) and Gamma irradiated (sterilised) so that it is light and doesn’t give people food poisoning! (No one wants diarrhea in a space suit!!)
