Maddgirl, I don’t study the types of medicine that can cure animals but that is a wonderful area to be in. So many people own pets these days, and our pets need love and care and the best medicine out there to help them get better. Would you like to study medicine for animals?
One of the things we’re studying is how pesticides can poison humans, animals, and the environment. We’re looking at this enzyme that breaks down the poisons, which could one day save people and animals in case they accidentally eat the pesticides.
I hope one day our enzymes can save some farm animals!
Hi Maddgirl! My research at the moment is more on finding medicines for humans. BUT, the types of diseases humans get can also be caught in animals sometimes, so there is a good chance that along the way we might find some things that will be very good for animal cures!
The great thing about science is that we use things we find to help as many living things as we can. So although I am interested in human medicines, our findings might also help dogs or cats or other animals too.
Not directly, but some of the stuff I do with Clostridium difficile bugs (C diff superbugs) can be also used to cure nasty gut infections caused by similar bugs in chickens!! In fact, I am meeting with another scientist next week to discuss doing some experiments that might help his sick chickens as well as my sick humans!!
