Question: do you get payed a minim wage by beeing a science

Keywords: ,

  1. Hello willynilly. I remember chatting with you earlier on in the day! Scientist get paid depending on what or who they work for. Some places pay you super well, others pay you minimum. It all depends on what a scientist decides to work on and who they want to work with. So when you are a science teacher (we call them lecturers) at uni, you get paid very well. Its a lot of work, but its good pay! If you work as a Science Lab technician, so someone who looks after all the cool science gadgets, you get paid less, but still good! Hope that answers your very clever economy question.

  2. Hey willynilly101 you’ve had some great questions today!

You can get paid LOTS of money to be a scientist, and you can get paid minimum wage. There are lots of different types of jobs out there in science. My pay is not minimu, but it’s nowhere near the top! But I’m only relatively young, so a long way to go.

Pay can also come down to things like where you work, the country, the type of science research, or even how much money the employer has to give out to staff! Very clever question!

  3. You do get paid well when you HAVE a job as a scientist…the biggest problem is that you spend a long time as a poorly paid student whilst training as well as having big gaps between contracts sometimes. So you don’t get to build up your retirement savings as much as a person that does another job, as you pay tax and superannuation for a smaller amount of time.

BUT if you do make it and get a permanent job (some time in your late 30s early 40s) It is well paid in theory…but if you count all of the unpaid overtime in the evenings and weekends, it probably works out to approx $25 per hour after tax is taken away. I am still paying of my student debt, so that reduces the amount I earn as well.

  4. Definitely not willynilly101! You do get a proper wage when you start working : )

  5. Hey willynilly!

I think a lot of people say scientists get paid badly, but we don’t really! One of the big problems is actually *finding* a job that lets you do what you want to do, where you want to do it (don’t want to move to the middle of no where away from your friends!) but once you’re working, it’s just like a normal job!
